Nature Resource Center Museum Store
The Nature Research Center, the 80,000 square foot wing of the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, opened in April 2012 in downtown Raleigh. The center’s purpose is to bring science to the people. Visitors can observe scientists at work, and have opportunities to interact with the researchers. There are also regular presentations in the three-story multimedia theater, “The SECU Daily Planet”.
The NRC also features a cafe and The Museum Store. Unique Concepts had the opportunity to build the cashwrap desk for the store. Reclaimed cypress (harvested in North Carolina) was used as a facing material for a large area of the desk. The desk also features brushed stainless steel, mini glass tiles and quartz transaction surfaces. Behind the desk is storage and display cabinetry with shelves made of reclaimed cypress.
The store’s designer, Sue Ramsay, of Witty and Associates in Raleigh, said that finishes for the store were selected to relate to the finishes in the adjacent cafe and museum lobby. “Having worked with Unique Concepts in the past, I knew that they were the right company for this project, which required bringing together a variety of unique materials”, said Ramsay. “The resulting desk is beautiful and functional and fits well in the store and the NRC.”
